How to Plate a Dirt Bike in Colorado

How to Plate a Dirt Bike in Colorado

Plating a dirt bike in Colorado is a simple process that allows you to legally transfer between OHV trails. There are so many amazing routes that require refueling or transfers on highway.

Get this done, you won't regret it.

Note: the advice listed here is simple summary of the requirements and the process experienced by Roost Concepts. This process should be verified with Colorado law for up-to-date accuracy . This process does not apply to locations other than Colorado. The modifications listed below should be done by a professional to guarantee safety and compliance.

Step 1: Setup the bike with the following equipment

> Headlight Constant on
> Taillight Constant on and with functioning brake light. Hydraulic switches replace a banjo bolt in your brake system and require the brakes to be bled. Some bikes have this as OEM, so check your bike before buying parts.
> Horn Can be wired up and installed with about $15 of parts.
> Mirror A single bar mounted mirror works great. There are foldaway options as well.
> Tires DOT symbol on the sidewall and have sufficient tread

What about blinkers? These are not required in Colorado, however if your motorcycle has them as OEM equipment they must be functioning. If you don't have blinkers just be ready to demonstrate the hand signals.

Step 2: VIN and Compliance Inspection at Colorado State Patrol Location

    • Ensure you have a clean VIN number that is visible on the bike.
    • Transport the bike without riding it to the inspection.
    • The bike must run. The officer will likely ask you to run the bike.
    • Schedule a VIN inspection, cost is $53 and the appointment only takes 20 minutes. Note, appointments can back up so plan accordingly. Book appointment here: https://csp.colorado.gov/services-we-provide/get-a-vin-inspection
    • The inspector will have the required forms so you do not need to print anything ahead of time.

    Step 3: DMV Registration

    • Obtain liability insurance for your dirt bike. We've had good luck with low cost options from Progressive. Note, it's generally only $20 more a year to get comprehensive insurance, so get a quote and see if it's worth it. With comprehensive you should be in the $100-200 range per year and this should cover theft but verify that with your insurance agent.
    • Schedule an appointment at your local DMV.
    • Prepare the required forms,
      • DR2686, Certification of Equipment Compliance (obtained at inspection)
      • DR2704, Certified VIN Inspection (obtained at inspection)
      • DR2395, Application for Title and/or Registration
      • Valid drivers license
      • Proof of insurance, must be currently active
      • Proof of ownership (title, bill of sale, or OHV registration)
    • You will receive a physical license plate at this appointment! Party time.

Step 4: Mount the Plate with a Mullet Plate Holder

    • Mount your plate to the rear of the bike.
      • Which plate holder do we recommend? The Mullet plate holder because it is the most durable and versatile option on the market. It is made in Colorado by Colorado riders and only requires 2 or 3 holes. After initial setup it can be removed or installed on the bike in seconds.
